Community Sustainability Commission
On Monday, March 15th, 2010, Community Sustainability Commissioners were sworn into office at their first meeting in the Commission Room at City Hall. The commission also elected a Chairperson and Vice Chairperson. The Commission is comprised of seven voting Commissioners and four ex-officio members, including:

The Commission shall:

Advise the city council on implementation of the Benicia Climate Action Plan and related City Strategic Plan performance measures, as appropriate.

Provide recommendations regarding the distribution of climate action and water conservation funds from the 2008 Valero Improvement Plan Settlement Agreement and from future funding sources allocated to support the efforts of making Benicia a more sustained community with reference to the Climate Action Plan.

Advise the city council on matters related to sustainability, climate change and greenhouse gas reductions, including recommendations on forthcoming innovative programs and amendments to the Climate Action Plan, if necessary.

Facilitate public outreach, education and collaboration with regards to community sustainability to guide Benicia’s transition towards being a sustainable, socially just, economically vibrant, and green community.

Prepare an Annual Report to city council on implementation measures.

Make recommendations to the city council regarding funding, including the search for private and public grants consistent with the needs of the community.
Community Sustainability Commission Established
On Tuesday, August 18, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 09-16 establishing the Community Sustainability Commission. Benicia has emerged as a sustainable leader among local governments and a lot of the credit goes to our engaged community members.
